Studio art graduate students Celestia Morgan and Kelsey Windham present thesis exhibitions in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts degrees in spring 2017.

Celestia Morgan is a photographer who uses both photo and other visual information to produce moving installations that map her experience of place and family. Her titles convey this with a series entitled Passage whose individual works are titled by the latitude and longitude of a site documented by a photograph. Morgan describes this series: “Passage explores the connections between social landscapes, memory, history, and identity. Private and public perceptions of landscape are explored through a series of tondo photographs and wood carved block panels. These photographs and maps depict personal historical landmarks and GPS map lines within urban neighborhoods in the surrounding areas of Birmingham, Alabama.” Celestia Morgan received the Windgate Charitable Foundation Studio Art Scholarship; the License Tag Fellowship for the Arts, The University of Alabama; and the Elite Senior Scholarship, Department of Art and Art History, University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Kelsey Windham is a painter who creates large and small-scale works on paper. Her active physical application of oil pigment on large scale paper informs the production of empowered, moving landscapes that celebrate color, tactility and light. The heroic scale of these pieces contrasts with other intimately scaled studies that anticipate enlargement. Windham earned her BFA degree as valedictorian from the Memphis College of Art. Other honors include the Graduate Council Fellowship, The University of Alabama; the I.L. Myers Memorial Scholarship, Memphis College of Art; and the Hohenberg Traveling Fellowship for Study Abroad in Italy. – William T. Dooley, Director, Sarah Moody Gallery of Art
