Reception: Thursday, November 20, 6-8 p.m.

Our last exhibit of the fall semester, Contemporary Treasures: Selections from the Permanent Collection, features more than 30 pieces belonging to the gallery collection. The variety represented in this group is borne out in medium, disciplinary approach and time. Artworks selected for this exhibit span five decades and were created primarily by American artists. The Permanent Collection, housed and cared for by the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, was created in the late 1960s as a unique and integral component of the Department of Art and Art History. Citing the director, William Dooley, “It is exciting to organize and present this exhibition because we have in our collection such a wonderful variety of approaches and genres represented in art since 1950.”

The majority of the collection is dedicated to works on paper including graphic prints and photography. Also William Christenberry, "Moundville" 1959, oil on canvas, 41-3/4 X 83"included are paintings, drawings and small sculpture. Numerous gifts of art have been directed to the gallery’s collection by donors with ties to the University. The gallery has made it a practice to purchase several works each year. Over time this collection has grown to more than 1,500 works. These works are under the care of the gallery and it is a privilege to share them with the university in this exhibition.
