The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art presents the exhibit, In This House: Selections from the Permanent Collection, beginning with an opening reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. The exhibition runs through April 10. Gallery Director, William Dooley selected works by Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Murray, Kara Walker, Jim Dine, Chuck Close, April Gornik, Walker Evans and William Christenberry, among others, to be included in this much-anticipated annual exhibition. Dooley said, “Seeing these together in the context of the exhibition will give the viewer the opportunity to discover relationships between works regarding content, meaning, composition and materials.”

The Permanent Collection, housed and cared for by the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, was created in the 1960s as a unique and integral component of the Department of Art and Art History. The gallery, supported by The University of Alabama’s College of Arts and Sciences, has collected more than one 1,500 works on paper, photography, prints, paintings, as well as small sculpture, focusing on modern and contemporary art. The gallery regularly presents exhibitions from the Permanent Collection. Additional program funding is provided by the Farley Moody Galbraith Endowed Exhibition Fund.

James R. Nelson, visual arts critic emeritus for the Birmingham News and first executive director of the Alabama School of Fine Arts, has described the SMGA’s Permanent Collection in this way: “The collection is both a permanent asset and a teaching tool. Now constituting one of the best institutional collections in Alabama, it also illustrates the passing currents that keep the visual arts a vital and incisive record of contemporary history.”
