The University of Alabama Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is offering a doubleheader for the public, October 12 – November 22, 2017. Contemporary Consolidated: Selections from the Permanent Collection will be installed at two sites: The University of Alabama Art Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in downtown Tuscaloosa and the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art in Garland Hall on the UA campus. The exhibition will be a rare opportunity for the public to see more of the gallery’s wide array of internationally renowned artists’ works. The public is invited to attend receptions on Thursday, October 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Garland Hall and on Friday, November 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. (First Friday) in downtown Tuscaloosa. Soon after the UA Art Department formed in 1943, it began collecting works of art. In the early 1950s, Sarah McCorkle Moody, for whom the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is named, donated significant pieces from her private collection, including two Picasso prints, to the department and the Permanent Collection was established. Her daughter, Farley Moody Galbraith, created a significant shift in the momentum of the gallery with the founding of an endowment. That, and the support of the College of Arts and Sciences has established the collection as “both a permanent asset and a teaching tool,” according to educator, art critic and first executive director of the Alabama School of Fine Arts, James R. Nelson. Nelson goes on to say, “Now constituting one of the best institutional collections in Alabama, it also illustrates the passing currents that keep the visual arts a vital and incisive record of contemporary history.” The permanent collection is dedicated to works on paper including prints and photography. Paintings, drawings and small sculpture will also be featured in this exhibition. The collection’s holdings include notable artists such as: Pablo Picasso, Walker Evans, Chuck Close, Lee Krasner, Robert Rauschenberg, Susan Rothenberg, Carrie Mae Weems, Jennifer Bartlett, Judy Pfaff and Willie Cole. And the collection continues to grow, thanks to generous gifts of art from donors as well as purchases, with a current total numbering more than 1,500 works. The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is supported by the UA College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Art and Art History. Admission to both galleries is free.
