In February, digital media major Angel Greene’s surfboard design was selected to represent The University of Alabama at the Maui Jim Tournament. The tournament is a design competition sponsored by the company Maui Jim and is held in conjunction with the Maui Jim Invitational, the annual college basketball tournament that will be held in Hawaii during Thanksgiving week. Nov. 23-25, 2020.
At half time during the Feb. 29 men’s basketball game against South Carolina, male members of the Crimson Tide’s Spirit Squad lifted Greene’s winning surfboard high above their heads, with Big Al balancing on it, and carried him out on the gym floor for her award announcement. Although Alabama had been down in the first half, the surfboard ceremony seemed to signal a resurgence and the Tide surfed back to win over the Gamecocks 90-86.
Greene is a senior BFA major concentrating in digital media and painting. She created her winning surfboard design in Assistant Professor Jonathan Cumberland’s ART 434 Illustration class.
