Ryan Akers‘ painting Penteco$t was selected for the Director’s Award in the biennial 44th Montgomery Art Guild Museum Exhibition.
New grad student Nathan Childers recently won an honorable mention at the Georgia Watercolor Society 42nd National Exhibition in Carrollton, Georgia. His work has been juried into Ink Only III National Juried Print Biennial, Durbin Gallery, Birmingham-Southern College, opening in September. He has been awarded a UA Graduate Council Fellowship for 2021-2022.
Zoe Fitch’s painting, Mississippi Migrant Mother, won First Place in the In Art Gallery’s online exhibition, Me, Myself & I. Fitch’s large acrylic painting and screenprint work, Kudzu in the Thick, was among those selected for Special Recognition in the 11th “Open” Online Art Competition (Painting & Other Media Category) in the online Light Space Time Gallery.
Art history grad student Ashleigh McCool Junkin will present her research paper, “Picturing Oppression: Spectacle and the African American Body in Turn of the Century Medical Photography,” at the 2021 SECAC conference in Lexington, Kentucky in October.
Upneet Kaur Mair’s large silkscreen and relief print on muslin (54 x 92 inches), titled Welcome to the Club, part of her MA exhibition, was selected for publication in the August 2021 issue of The Hand: A Magazine for Reproduction-Based Art.
In June 2021, Lizzie Orlofsky presented her research at the virtual Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) Festival hosted by the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Her presentation, “The Soul’s Sensational Journey Through the Portal at Kilpeck Church,” stems from her research during a graduate seminar on medieval portal sculpture taught by Dr. Jennifer Feltman.
Shivam Pawar had work juried into Cimarron National Works on Paper Exhibition, hosted by Oklahoma State University’s Gardiner Gallery of Art. The show received over 450 submissions and accepted 48 pieces. Two works by Pawar were chosen for publication in the August 2021 issue of The Hand: A Magazine for Reproduction-Based Art. Earlier in the summer, Pawar had two prints accepted to the 19th International Graphic Triennial in the Stadtsaal, Frechen, Germany.
René Thompson had a painting juried into the 55th Montgomery (Ala.) Art Guild Regions Bank Exhibition, opening in September; a work was chosen for Special Recognition in the Open Exhibition at the Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery. Thompson and her work were recognized by Artsy Shark in a feature on four artists discussing art and mental health. And, she was named one of five July 2021 Artists of the Month by ArtJobs.
Sandra Vega‘s screenprint, Genealógico, was selected for the online exhibition Textures & Patterns at Las Lagunas Gallery in Las Lagunas, California, August 5-28, 2021.
