Art & Art History Faculty Teach Students at Community Day

Foam print by Tuscaloosa Magnet School – Elementary student, July 2022

Dr. Lucy Curzon and Charlotte Wegrzynowski participated in Tuscaloosa Magnet School – Elementary’s Community Day in May. Wegrzynowski taught two workshops on paper lantern-making for the “Flow Tuscaloosa” Parade, held on the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk the day after Community Day. Dr. Curzon visited all of the fifth-grade classrooms and taught foam printmaking to the students. They created relief prints by carving a piece of foam with a dull pencil point and then printing on paper. Curzon said the students learned about replicability and were fascinated by having to write backwards – “mirror-writing” – in order for words to print “forward.” Tuscaloosa Magnet School-Elementary holds Community Day in order for community members to share their talents and skills with students and for students to participate in a variety of new experiences. Other Community Day participants included the department of geology, the West Alabama Quilters Guild, the department of computer science, and the Alabama Museum of Natural History.
