Art & Art History Summer Faculty Accolades 2021

Catch up on what our faculty have been doing during the spring and summer of 2021.

Books Published

Associate Professor Dr. Tanja Jones‘ edited volume of essays titled Women Artists in the Early Modern Courts of Europe c. 1450-1700 is now available from Amsterdam University Press.

Associate Professor Christopher Jordan’s book Nowhere in Place is out and he will give a book talk at Ernest and Hadley Booksellers in Tuscaloosa on August 26 at 5 pm (registration required).

Exhibitions

Assistant Professor Wade MacDonald has had work juried into three exhibitions: Geaux Cups International Juried Exhibition at the Clay Center of New Orleans; A Taste of Home National Juried Cup Exhibition in Port Chester, New York; and Cheers! Drink Up! International Juried Drinking Vessel Exhibition in Manitou Springs, Colorado, for which his entry received an honorable mention.

Fellowships & Residencies

Assistant Professor Dr. Wendy Castenell has been named to the Tyson Scholars Think Tank at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, a competitive, three-week fellowship residency for scholars of American art in August 2021.

Wade MacDonald was accepted to a one-month artist residency at Zentrum für Keramik (Center for Ceramics) in Berlin, Germany, in May 2022.

Presentations, Scholarly Sessions & Panel Discussions

Assistant Professor Dr. Jennifer Feltman presented (virtually) “Dating Reuse: The Statue Columns of the Last Judgment Portal of Reims Cathedral,” at the international conference, City as Palimpsest», Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, in Naples.

Feltman presented “Experiencing Gothic: A VR Cathedral for Middle Schoolers” at the convening meeting of the Whiting Foundation Fellows, New York, NY.

In April at the Renaissance Society of America annual conference, RSA Virtual 2021, Dr. Tanja Jones co-organized and chaired (virtually) three linked sessions with 12 participating scholars from the US, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK. The sessions were devoted to Renaissance medals, coins and exonumia.

In April, Jones and Assistant Professor Dr. Doris Sung co-presented virtually with Dr. Tracy Chapman Hamilton (VCU) “Mapping Global Trajectories of Women Makers: Processes and Findings,” in a session devoted to the study of Early Modern women as artists, patrons and collectors, during the 2021 Annual Conference of the Association for Art History (British).

In June, Wade MacDonald participated in a virtual panel discussion organized by artist Adam Chau with artist and educator Jennifer Ling Datchuk addressing the practice of using interdisciplinary strategies with a primary focus on clay. The recorded discussion is part of a larger series of discussions sponsored by the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts.
