Graduate Student Included in National Painting Publication

Juan Lopez-Bautista, Borderlands / Zonas Fronterizas, acrylic and gouache on synthetic paper, 25 x 38 inches.

Graduate student in painting Dr. Juan Lopez-Bautista has had two paintings published in the juried artist book Studio Visit, vol. 47, 2020. Produced by the publishers of the magazine New American Paintings, Studio Visit selects artworks by jury and introduces new and emerging artists to the art world.

Dr. Lopez-Bautista’s work explores his Mexican-American identity as an immigrant and the immigrant experience as a whole, particularly the individuals who make the dangerous border crossings along the US-Mexico border. He said, “I am so honored to be selected to appear in Studio Visit, in part because of the potential visibility of my work and also, to disseminate my goals of empathy for these social issues.”

López-Bautista has held recent solo exhibitions at the Gadsden Museum of Art, Lowe Mill Arts in Huntsville, and the Martin-Lett Gallery of Art in the Oxford Performing Arts Center, Oxford, Alabama. He holds a PhD in plant biology from Louisiana State University and has taught for more than a decade in UA’s department of biology. His scientific research focuses on the biodiversity, systematics and phylogenomics of marine and terrestrial algae and he teaches courses in the biology of algae, plant biology and advanced phycology.
