UA students in graphic design kept a winning tradition going at this year’s American Advertising Federation (AAF) Tuscaloosa’s annual ADDY awards ceremony, “Tuscaloosa’s biggest night in advertising.”
In the student category, Julie White, a senior BFA major in graphic design, won the Gold ADDY in Book Design, for her rendition of Marshall McLuhan’s classic book, “The Medium is the Massage.” Josie Fuller, a BA major in interdisciplinary studies, won a Silver ADDY in Package Design; Cole Engelbrecht, a senior BFA major in graphic design, won a Silver ADDY in Package Design; and Bella Zaleski, a senior advertising major with a minor in studio art won a Silver ADDY in Package Design.
White created her project in Assistant Professor Jonathan Cumberland‘s publication design class, and Fuller, Engelbrecht and Zaleski created their projects in Cumberland’s package design class.
In the professional category, Jonathan Cumberland won a Silver ADDY in Illustration for a cover illustration he created for The University of Alabama National Alumni Association’s Alabama Alumni magazine.
The American Advertising Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition in the US. It attracts over 40,000 entries yearly in local chapters of the American Advertising Federation competitions. The Tuscaloosa ADDYs are the first step in a three-tier, national competition. These local winners will proceed to the second tier, to compete against winners from other local clubs in one of 15 district competitions. District winners then will compete in national finals.
