The Susan N. McCollough Fine Arts Initiative – A University of Alabama Biennial Event

October 6 - December 1, 2023

This brand-new juried exhibition series will feature the artwork of current UA art students alongside the work of UA art alumni. There will be a reception for the artists on Friday, October 6, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a presentation and juried prizes awarded at 5:30 p.m.

Reception, September 1, 5-7:00 p.m., during downtown Tuscaloosa's First Friday Art Walk. Birmingham native Stephen Humphreys presents a collection of digital color photographs that he took over the last several months while living in Ukraine.

Tony Sturgis - Pulse & Color

June 2 - July 28, 2023

Artist's reception, Friday, June 2, 5-7:00 p.m., during downtown Tuscaloosa's First Friday Art Walk.  Tony Sturgis paints intensely hued layered and textured abstract paintings embued with cathartic, healing qualities. He holds a BFA in studio art from the University of Montevallo and works full-time as a Lieutenant Firefighter Paramedic with Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue. He is represented by Beverly McNeil Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama.

An Act of Attention: Molly Lay MFA Thesis Exhibition

April 7 - May 5, 2023

Artist's reception, Friday, April 7, 5-7:00 p.m., during downtown Tuscaloosa's First Friday Art Walk. Molly Lay is a graduate student in sculpture and a teaching assistant in 3D Design. In her artist statement, Lay writes: “My current work explores the habit of walking through natural spaces and the opportunity this practice creates to bring a sense of awareness to one’s lived experience. I am interested in how the pace and pattern of footfalls can affect thought patterns. Read more.

Roscoe Hall: Two Houses

January 9 – February 23, 2023

Artist's reception, First Friday, February 3, 5-7 p.m. Raised in Chicago, artist Roscoe Hall has deep Alabama roots. Hall’s background and longtime skill set are deeply entrenched in the culinary world of the South – his grandfather was John “Big Daddy” Bishop, founder of Tuscaloosa’s Dreamland Bar-B-Que. Hall, who has earned his own cooking accolades is also a rising star in the art world. His layered, mixed media paintings bring together these aspects of his life like two houses on the same street. Patty B. Driscoll: The Magpie in the Mirror

October 7 - December 2, 2022

Artist's reception, First Friday, November 4, 5-7 p.m. Art historian Tanja L. Jones writes in the catalog essay, “Patty B. Driscoll’s beguiling works of art engage questions of identity, self-awareness and equity. In this exhibition, the artist ranges across media to address belonging, acknowledgement, tradition, violence, and rebellion through painstakingly detailed objects. Some are designed to endure while others beguilingly convey that permanence is elusive and that all is not what it seems.” Driscoll utilizes traditional genres and processes such as the still life, water gilding, metalwork, and textiles, layering her work with subtle narratives and subject matter that investigate the context of feminine and feminist identity. The artist writes that her work “is a dialogue with historical pathways, iconography and the symbolism of women, and challenges implicit societal representations and inculcated cultural values.”

Pat Snow: You Will Never Read My Poetry

August 5 – September 28, 2022

Pat Snow investigates narrative structures and storytelling in his work. Informed by the DIY and Outsider movements of the 1980s and ‘90s, he pulls from low and high art, and words, ideas, and images from sources such as pop songs, blues lyrics, and Noam Chomsky. Read more about the exhibition.
