The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art presents William Paul Thomas: Breathin’ Different October 24 – December 12, 2019. There will be a lecture by the artist on Wednesday, October 23 in 205 Smith Hall, at 5 pm. The exhibition opens Thursday evening with a reception for the artist from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
William Paul Thomas is a painter and videographer from Durham, North Carolina. His artworks consist of an ongoing series of portraits he began in 2015 with his nephew as subject. He selects models for his paintings from personal relationships and uses descriptive titles that specify his point of view. This offers his audience a starting point to further contextualize the painted subject. Thomas states, “The work begins as an intimate acknowledgement of an individual and is subsequently transformed into a set of symbols poised for the viewer’s investigation.” He received his BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Thomas has exhibited regionally and held several residencies, his most recent in 2019 at Duke University’s Rubenstein Arts Center.
