UA Grad Student’s Work Selected for Prestigious National Juried Show

Graduate student Nathan Childers had two paintings selected for POSITIVE/NEGATIVE 38: National Juried Art Exhibition by Mark Scala, chief curator of the Frist Art Museum, who was the juror. The exhibition, sponsored by East Tennessee State University’s Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries, runs through March 24, 2023. Scala will present the juror’s lecture on Thursday, March 23, at 6:00 p.m. following the awarding reception at 5:00 p.m. at the Slocumb Galleries in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Only 38 works were selected from 157 national entries submitted for this long-running exhibition. Childers’ works accepted were “No Need to Change,” and “The Things We Lock Away,” two oil paintings. Over the years, POSITIVE/NEGATIVE has featured jurors from the staffs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Getty Research Institute; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden; and many other distinguished museums and art organizations.

Nathan Childers’ paintings have been included in numerous exhibitions around the country. He won Best in Show award in the exhibition Queer Aesthetics held at Mississippi University for Women Galleries, and received an Honorable Mention at the Georgia Watercolor Society 42nd National Exhibition in Carrollton, Georgia His work was juried into Ink Only III National Juried Print Biennial, Art Fields (2020 and 2021), Mark Arts Oil Painting National Exhibition and Kansas Watercolor Society National Exhibition. Childers has also participated in one- and three-person shows at Lowe Mill Arts in Huntsville, Alabama, and the Carrollton (Ga.) Center for the Arts. He received a BFA cum laude in painting from the University of West Georgia.
