Alumna Arielle Gray (BA 2019) won an Innovate Grant in December 2021. Innovate Grant awards small grants each quarter to innovative artists working in art and photography. Gray said that she will use the funds “to obtain resources for raising the production quality of my work.”

The organization interviewed Gray after the award and asked about the best advice she could give to other artists. Her answer was on target, with a photographer’s twist: “Stay focused but remember that not all of the best images have to be in focus.” Read her full interview here and explore her work. In a separate interview for PhotoNOLA’s book fair, she was asked what her favorite photo books in 2021 are.

Arielle Gray graduated from UA in 2019 with a BA in studio art and a minor in art history. In 2021, she was one of only 20 artists from around the country to receive Aperture’s and Google’s Creator Labs Photo Fund award. She studies photography at Yale School of Art with a full scholarship.
