UA Art and Art History Award Winners in the West Alabama Juried Show

UA Department of Art and Art History faculty and alumni were among the local Alabama artists whose work was selected for the annual West Alabama Juried Show, sponsored by The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa. The awards ceremony and reception took place during downtown Tuscaloosa’s First Friday Art Walk, on February 2, 2024.

West Alabama artists were allowed to submit up to three works for judging including two- and three-dimensional pieces. The competition was juried and the winners were selected by Cynthia Buob, a figurative painter and art instructor at East Mississippi Community College.

Sarah Marshall, “Aggressive Reassurance,” 2021, screenprint, cyanotype, natural and artificial dyes, machine quilting, 28.5 x 38 inches.

Associate Professor Sarah Marshall won the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama Purchase Award ($1,000) for her work “Aggressive Reassurance.” Her quilted screenprint and cyanotype will be displayed at the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, 9th street in Tuscaloosa, as part of The Arts Council’s permanent collection and a partnership between the two organizations.

Alumnus Eric Nubbe won the Gail Skidmore Memorial Award of Excellence Contributed by The Arts Council ($300) for his sculpture, “Lock #1”

Alumna Deborah Hughes was awarded an Honorable Mention for her painting “Conjuring Woods and Water.”

Established in 1985, the West Alabama Juried Show represents The Arts Council’s mission to promote the arts in Tuscaloosa County. The exhibit offers local artists in West Alabama counties the opportunity to have their work displayed in a public setting and win cash awards for their efforts.
