Birmingham’s artist cooperative, Ground Floor Contemporary, will host a solo exhibition, Whistle a Map, by UA art alumna Anne Herbert December 2-18, 2021. A reception for the artist will be Thursday, December 2, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Herbert will give an artist talk in the gallery Saturday, December 11, at 2:00 p.m.
Along with group exhibitions by their member artists, Ground Floor Contemporary also holds yearly exhibitions by visiting artists and curators. Although they often look out-of-state for these, gallery director Jennifer Marshall explained, “We looked within the state this year for the visiting artist. Anne was selected because of the strength of her work and her rigorous art practice – studio, teaching, and curating.”
Anne Herbert lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama. She recently completed a residency at Stove Works in Chattanooga. She was included in the Artist/Mother group exhibition Painting at Night in 2020, and received the First Place Prize in the SECAC 2019 Juried Exhibition. Herbert holds a BFA from the University of Montevallo and an MFA from the University of Alabama. She has taught painting at the Alabama School of Fine Arts since 2015 and is the director of ASFA’s Vulcan Materials Gallery.
Ground Floor Contemporary, at 111 Richard Arrington Jr Boulevard, South, Birmingham, is open on Saturdays 1-4 pm and by appointment.
