Art history and studio art faculty have returned from summer studies with exhibition, fellowship, and publishing accolades.
Assistant Professor Dr. Doris Sung published an article titled “Enacting Care: Feminist Interventions and Social Activism in the Work of Hong Kong Artist Jaffa Lam,” in the Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, vol. 10, issue 1-2 (Aug 2023): 107-129. Sung has received three grants to support the publication of her monograph, Women of Chinese Modern Art: Gender and Reforming Traditions in National and Global Spheres, 1900s–1930s, due out in late 2023, published by De Gruyter: the College Art Association Millard Meiss Publication Grant and the Metropolitan Center for Far Eastern Art Studies Individual Grant and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange Publication Subsidy Grant.
Associate Professor Allison Grant received a 2023 Cauthen Fellowship from the Alabama Folklife Association with historian Kristina Mullenix for their project “Coal Miners in Brookwood.” The Joyce H. Cauthen Fellowship Fund was established in 2010 to honor Cauthen’s contributions to Alabama folklife and her commitment to the AFA, in order to provide awards to community and academic researchers to document and preserve Alabama folkways. Grant also received seed funding for a new project from the Council for Community-Based Partnerships at The University of Alabama.
In September, Daniel White, director of the Paul R. Jones Museum and The University of Alabama Gallery, was the juror for the international print exhibition, INK ONLY IV, and a judge at ArtWalk in Birmingham.
Bethany Moody, instructor of foundations, exhibited CNC-generated fiber and print work in the Stephens Residency Exhibition at the University of Montevallo’s Bloch Hall Gallery in August and September. She produced the work over the summer during a three-month Stephens Residency.
