In April, Dr. Jennifer M. Feltman delivered a plenary lecture, “Digital Twin Technologies, Notre Dame and Beyond: Current Challenges, Possible Futures,” at the 2023 Medieval Association of the Pacific Annual Conference hosted by the University of Oregon and sponsored by the University of Oregon, Department of the History of Art and Architecture, Sponenburgh Lecture Series. The talk detailed her research into virtual reality applications for visualizing and teaching medieval architecture. Dr. Feltman also received the 2023 President’s Faculty Research Award recipient for Mid-Career Scholars in the Arts and Humanities.
Assistant Professor Dr. Doris Sung received two grants for the publication of her monograph, Women of Chinese Modern Art: Gender and Reforming Traditions in National and Global Spheres, 1900s–1930s, due out in fall 2023, published by De Gruyter: the College Art Association Millard Meiss Publication Grant and The Metropolitan Center for Far Eastern Art Studies Individual Grant.
Assistant Professor Wade MacDonald has been appointed to a three-year term on the Alabama Visual Arts Network board of directors. In April, MacDonald was awarded second place for his ceramic work in the national juried exhibition Shapes of Influence 2023, juried by Jennifer Holt.
As noted by UA News, Professor Craig Wedderspoon and his Art 222 Intro to Sculpture students completed sculptural education panels for Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreation Authority’s Van de Graaff Park Eco-Trail in Northport last fall. The panels, which hold textual information about native species in the area, depict several species of insects, fungi, birds, and reptiles in cast and cut metal sculptures that visitors are invited to read about. The information on the panels was contributed by the UA Department of Biological Sciences. The Eco-Trail opened in May of 2023.
