Deborah Hughes “Recaptures” Exhibition at UA Medical Center

The newest “Wellness Walls for Art” exhibit at the UA Medical Center, Recaptured, Rediscovered, and Reconsidered, will be on display through October 1, 2016. Photography by Bethany Windham Engle, collages by Helen Shapiro, and still life paintings by Deborah Hughes and Slocum Hughes are featured. Wellness Walls for Art curator Deborah Hughes explains, “‘Recaptured’ refers to Bethany’s photo work, ‘Rediscovered’ is an all new set of collages by artist Helen Shapiro that I acquired out of her house in Meridian, Mississippi, and ‘Reconsidered’ is still life paintings by my great aunt Slocum Hughes and some still lifes I did through various stages of my life, including my first one of note when I was eight years old, a teenager, a college student and beyond.”

Recaptured, Rediscovered, and Reconsidered

Artist and UA art alumna Deborah Hughes has curated the Wellness Walls for Art changing exhibitions at the University Medical Center since 2013. Exhibitions have included A Brush With Art – Paintings by The Tuscaloosa and University PaintersThe Many Faces of Art in Adult Continuing Education; A Sense of PlaceThe Artist’s Studio, Inside and OutAbout People and Quilting and Carving; and More Quilters, Carving and Printing Too! featuring the prints of Isadora Bullock and quilts by the West Alabama Quilters Guild. The UMC is located 850 5th Ave E, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401. The exhibition is open during its regular business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-4:45 pm.
