Pete Schulte and Yevgeniya Baras in the SMGA January 19

(TUSCALOOSA, ALA.)  The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is proud to present the exhibition Yevgeniya Baras and Pete Schulte, January 19 through February 24, 2023. On Thursday, January 26, Pete Schulte will present a lecture in the Camellia Room of Gorgas Library at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the gallery.

This exhibition brings together the work of artists Yevgeniya Baras and Pete Schulte for a dialogue on abstraction, line and color in contemporary painting and drawing. At first glance, their works seem diametrically opposed, Schulte’s subtly-hued graphite drawings contrast to Baras’ built-up, color-rich paintings. Before meeting in person, their ideas for the exhibition were developed through Zoom conversations between the two artists. As essayist Avila Edmonds-Doberenz writes, “the artists discovered the similarities that lie between their creative processes. They found that many foundational ideas central to their practice corresponded with each other.” While using specific rational criteria to select works for the show, “they also made decisions based on intuition and feel, even creating new works specifically for the exhibition.”
